A Special Message From Joe Ortwerth Header

Where Do the Presidential Candidates Stand on Issues of Concern

    to Christian Families?

A week from tomorrow, our country will decide which leader will direct the course of our nation for the next four years.  Never before have issues of concern to committed Christians been more at stake.  The future of the family, our religious values, our religious heritage, and our religious liberties truly hang in the balance.

We pray that citizens across America will choose as our President a man who will honor God, respect Christian beliefs, and reflect Biblical values in the Oval Office.

The Missouri Family Policy Council has prepared the following analysis of the positions of the candidates and their past records on the subjects of the sanctity of human life, marriage, the family, and traditional values.   While there are many issues of interest to families in our country, we believe these issues are of paramount importance in determining the collective character and moral conscience of the United States of America.

This analysis is a factual and objective review of the candidate's past and present stands on these issues.  We encourage you to evaluate it carefully and consider it prayerfully as you prepare to cast your ballot.  Please share this information with family and friends, fellow church members, neighbors, and associates at school and in the workplace.

Please be praying that the American people will have a discerning spirit as they make their choice about the future moral direction and spiritual climate of our nation.

The Sanctity of Human Life

*President Obama is an outspoken and aggressive advocate of abortion on demand.  The President is a fervent supporter of the Roe v. Wade decision, which legalized abortion at any stage of pregnancy for any reason.  President Obama has stated on numerous occasions:  "I will never back down in defending a woman's right to choose."  He has received a 100 percent rating from NARAL Pro-Choice America and Planned Parenthood.

*President Obama supports sex-selection abortions, opposing legislation in Congress to ban abortions based on gender.

*As a state senator in Illinois, President Obama voted against and spoke against legislation to protect children born alive during an abortion.  He actively opposed a bill which would have required that medical care be provided to children surviving an abortion.

*President Obama supports the appointment of justices to the U.S. Supreme Court who will preserve abortion on demand.

*President Obama has appointed dozens of virulent pro-abortion activists to leading positions in the federal bureaucracy, including the militantly pro-abortion Director of the Department of Health and Human Services, Kathleen Sebelius.

*President Obama successfully pushed health care legislation which includes taxpayer funding of abortion.  The Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (oftentimes referred to as Obamacare) includes federal subsidies for abortion coverage and an abortion surcharge premium.

*President Obama has been an avid supporter of Planned Parenthood, and has backed the distribution of federal family planning funding and Medicaid funding to the nation's leading abortion provider.  His administration has gone to court to block efforts by various states to eliminate the allocation of federal family planning funds and Medicaid funds for Planned Parenthood.  President Obama's support for Planned Parenthood has even extended to taping fundraising appeals for Planned Parenthood in the Oval Office.

*President Obama has authorized the use of federal funds for international organizations that perform and promote abortions, revoking the "Mexico City policy" that prohibited the use of foreign aid for such purposes.

*President Obama has used the State Department to promote increased access and availability of abortion in countries around the globe.

*President Obama supports federal funding of the cloning and destruction of human embryos for medical research, reversing a Bush Administration ban on almost all programs of federally funded embryonic stem cell research.

*As a component of Obamacare, the Obama Administration imposed a contraceptive and abortion drug mandate on virtually all health insurance policies issued in the United States.  That mandate requires that all health insurance plans include coverage of abortifacient drugs and contraceptives, regardless of the religious beliefs and convictions of religious institutions and employers.

*President Obama rescinded regulations adopted by the Bush Administration protecting doctors, nurses, and other health care workers from being forced to participate in abortions and other medical procedures that violate their conscience.

*The Obama Administration successfully pushed changes to the federal budget eliminating funding for abstinence education programs.

*Mitt Romney opposes the Roe v. Wade decision legalizing abortion, and believes that decisions about regulation of abortion should be returned to the states, as was true prior to the 1973 Supreme Court decision.   Romney says he believes "in the sanctity of life from the very beginning until the very end."  He adds that "Americans have a moral duty to uphold the sanctity of life and protect the weakest, most vulnerable, and most innocent among us."  Romney says he believes that unborn children should be protected under the law, except in instances of rape, incest, and when the life of the mother is threatened.

*Mitt Romney supported abortion rights as a candidate for Governor of Massachusetts, but says his views changed as a result of further examination of the issue.

*Mitt Romney opposes the use of federal taxpayer dollars for abortion.  He says he will support retention of the Hyde Amendment, which prohibits the use of Medicaid dollars for abortion, and he opposes the disbursement of federal funds to Planned Parenthood.

*Mitt Romney says he will appoint justices to the Supreme Court who will "strictly construe the Constitution...and apply the original meaning of the Constitution" and not attempt to legislate from the bench.

*Mitt Romney says he will work to repeal the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (Obamacare) and put an end to federal subsidies of abortion contained therein.

*Mitt Romney opposes human cloning and embryonic stem cell research, and vetoed legislation as Governor of Massachusetts which would have legalized such research.  Romney opposes use of federal funds for embryonic stem cell research.  He says that "scientific research and preservation of human dignity are complementary, and America's laws must reflect this conviction."

*Mitt Romney says he will restore the Mexico City Policy prohibiting allocation of foreign family planning dollars to organizations that perform or refer for abortions.

*Mitt Romney says he will rescind the Obama Administration's contraceptive and abortion drug mandate on his first day in office.  "I will eliminate the rule that compels religious institutions to violate the tenets of their own faith."

*As Governor of Massachusetts, Romney vetoed legislation which would have required Catholic hospitals to administer abortifacient drugs.

Marriage, the Family, and Traditional Values

*President Obama supports the redefinition of marriage to include homosexual unions, saying that his support is based on his Christian faith and the Golden Rule. He opposes a federal constitutional amendment to define marriage as the union of a one man and one woman.

*President Obama strongly opposes the Defense of Marriage Act, which protects states from being required to recognize homosexual unions legally ratified in other states.

*The Obama Administration has refused to defend the Defense of Marriage Act in federal courts, failing to fulfill its constitutional responsibility to defend federal laws duly enacted by Congress.

*President Obama has aggressively promoted the passage of the Employment Non-Discrimination Act, which would provide special employment rights to homosexuals.

*President Obama has appointed dozens of outspoken homosexual activists to key posts in his Administration.

*President Obama successfully pushed legislation repealing a federal law which prohibits service in the U.S. military by avowed homosexuals.

*President Obama has issued annual proclamations declaring the month of June "National Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender Pride Month."  In those proclamations, the President has labeled efforts to defend traditional values as "pernicious" and "malicious."  Federal agencies, including the U.S. Defense Department, have held ceremonies celebrating Gay Pride Month.  The flag of the homosexual movement has flown underneath the U.S. flag at certain federal facilities during the month of June.

*The Obama Administration's Defense Department has permitted homosexual union ceremonies on U.S. military bases in violation of the Defense of Marriage Act.  President Obama has opposed legislation protecting military chaplains from being required to perform same-sex ceremonies.

*The Obama Administration's State Department has aggressively championed the practice of homosexuality as a human right in countries around the world.

*Mitt Romney supports the preservation of traditional marriage and opposes efforts to redefine marriage to include homosexual unions.  He says that "marriage is more than a personally rewarding social custom.  It is critical for the well-being of a civilization."  He supports the passage of a Federal Marriage Amendment to define marriage as the union of one man and one woman in the United States Constitution.

*Mitt Romney says that he opposes the establishment under the law of civil unions for homosexuals "if they are identical to marriage other than by name."  However, he does support domestic partnership benefits for homosexuals.

*Mitt Romney supports the Defense of Marriage Act, and pledges to instruct the U.S. Justice Department to defend the law in federal court.

*While Mitt Romney has in the past expressed support for legislation providing special employment rights for homosexuals, he now says that he opposes the federal "Employment Non-Discrimination Act."  He believes that the decision on whether to grant special employment rights to homosexuals should be left to the states.

*Mitt Romney supports the recent action by Congress authorizing service in the U.S. Armed Forces by avowed homosexuals.

*Mitt Romney believes that the Boy Scouts of America should allow homosexuals to be members of Boy Scout troops, in contradiction to the Scout oath that a Boy Scout is to be "physically strong, mentally awake, and morally straight."

*During his campaign for Governor of Massachusetts, Mitt Romney was a strong supporter of the homosexual rights agenda.  As Governor, he did propose legislation which would have exempted religious organizations like Catholic Charities from being forced to place adoptive children with homosexual couples, citing religious freedom concerns.
