Where Do the Political Parties Stand
on Issues of Concern
to Christian Families?
Every four years, the major political parties adopt a statement of shared values known as the party platform. This document spells out the convictions and views of the members of that political party on the major public policy issues of the day.
While candidates are not bound by the positions of their party's platform, the document does provide insight into the prevailing opinions of the leadership and the active members of that political party.
We thought you might find it helpful to know what the platforms of the major political parties have to say about leading issues of concern to Christian families. We hope this information proves helpful as you prayerfully consider how you will vote in the upcoming election.
Please share this information with family and friends, neighbors and fellow church members. We pray that Missouri voters will weigh the principles in these platforms against the principles in God's Word.
The Right to Life
The Democratic Platform
The Democratic Party supports abortion on demand for any reason at any time during pregnancy, and supports the use of taxpayer funding for abortion for women who cannot afford one.
"The President and the Democratic Party believe that women have a right to control their reproductive choices...The Democratic Party strongly and unequivocally supports Roe v. Wade and a woman's right to make decisions regarding her pregnancy, including a safe and legal abortion, regardless of ability to pay. We oppose any and all efforts to weaken and undermine that right. Abortion is an intensely personal decision between a woman, her family, her doctor, and her clergy; there is no place for politicians or government to get in the way."
The Democratic Party supports taxpayer funding for the abortion provider Planned Parenthood.
"Democrats support access to affordable family planning services, and President Obama and Democrats will continue to stand up to Republican efforts to defund Planned Parenthood health centers."
Cecile Richard, the President of Planned Parenthood, and Nancy Keenan, President of the National Abortion Rights Action League, were prominent speakers at the Democratic National Convention.
The Republican Platform
The Republican Party supports constitutional legal protection for preborn children.
"Faithful to the self-evident truths enshrined in the Declaration of Independence, we assert the sanctity of human life and affirm that the unborn child has a fundamental right to life which cannot be infringed. We support a Human Life Amendment to the Constitution and endorse legislation to make it clear that the Fourteenth Amendment's protections apply to unborn children. We support the appointment of judges who respect traditional family values and the sanctity of innocent human life."
"Republican leadership has led the effort to prohibit the barbaric practice of partial birth abortion...We urge Congress to strengthen the Born Alive Infant Protection Act by exacting appropriate civil and criminal penalties to health care providers who fail to provide treatment and care to an infant who survives an abortion...We call for legislation to ban sex-selective abortions--gender discrimination in its most lethal form--and to protect from abortion unborn children who are capable of feeling pain..."
"We also salute the many states that have passed laws for informed consent, mandatory waiting periods prior to an abortion, and health protective clinic regulation. We seek to protect young girls from exploitation through a parental consent requirement; and we affirm our moral obligation to assist, rather than penalize, women challenged by an unplanned pregnancy. We salute those who provide them with counseling and adoption alternatives and empower them to choose life..."
The Republican Party opposes taxpayer funding of abortion, embryonic stem cell research, and fetal tissue research.
"We oppose using public revenues to promote or perform abortion or fund organizations which perform or advocate it and will not fund or subsidize health care which includes abortion coverage...We call for a revision of federal law to bar the use of body parts from aborted fetuses for research. We support and applaud adult stem cell research to develop lifesaving therapies, and we oppose the killing of embryos for their stem cells. We oppose federal funding of embryonic stem cell research."
The Republican Party opposes efforts to legalize euthanasia.
"We oppose the non-consensual withholding or withdrawal of care or treatment, including food and water, from people with disabilities, including newborns, as well as the elderly and infirm, just as we oppose active and passive euthanasia and assisted suicide...We do not believe that health care providers should be allowed to withhold services because the healthcare provider believes the patient's life is not worth living."
Marriage and the Family
The Democratic Platform
The Democratic Party supports the redefinition of marriage to include homosexual unions and the repeal of the Defense of Marriage Act.
"We support the right of all families to have equal respect, responsibilities, and protections under the law. We support marriage equality and support the movement to secure equal treatment under law for same-sex couples."
"We oppose discriminatory federal and state constitutional amendments and other attempts to deny equal protection of the laws to committed same-sex couples who seek the same respect and responsibilities as other married couples. We support the full repeal of the so-called Defense of Marriage Act and the passage of the Respect for Marriage Act."
"We also support the freedom of churches and religious entities to decide how to administer marriage as a religious sacrament without government interference."
The Republican Platform
The Republican Party supports the preservation of traditional marriage and the retention of the Defense of Marriage Act.
"The institution of marriage is the foundation of civil society. Its success as an institution will determine our success as a nation. It has been proven by both experience and endless social science studies that traditional marriage is best for children. Children raised in intact married families are more likely to attend college, are physically and emotionally healthier, are less likely to use drugs or alcohol, engage in crime, or get pregnant outside of marriage."
"The success of marriage directly impacts the economic well-being of individuals. Furthermore, the future of marriage affects freedom. The lack of family formation not only leads to more government costs, but also to more government control over the lives of citizens in all aspects."
"We recognize and honor the courageous efforts of those who bear the many burdens of parenting alone, even as we believe that marriage, the union of one man and one woman, must be upheld as the national standard, a goal to stand for, encourage, and promote through laws governing marriage. We embrace the principle that all Americans should be treated with respect and dignity."
"We reaffirm our support for a Constitutional amendment defining marriage as the union of one man and one woman. We will enforce and defend in court the Defense of Marriage Act...affirming the right of States and the federal government not to recognize same-sex relationships licensed in other jurisdictions."
"A serious threat to our country's constitutional order, perhaps even more dangerous than presidential malfeasance, is an activist judiciary, in which some judges usurp the powers reserved to other branches of government. A blatant example has been the court-ordered redefinition of marriage in several states. This is more than a matter of warring legal concepts and ideals. It is an assault on the foundations of our society, challenging the institution, which, for thousands of years in virtually every civilization, has been entrusted with the rearing of children and the transmission of cultural values."
"We condemn the hate campaigns, threats of violence, and vandalism by proponents of same-sex marriage against advocates of traditional marriage and call for a federal investigation into attempts to deny religious believers their civil rights."
"Faith has always been a central part of the American story, and it has been a driving force of progress and justice throughout our history. We know that our nation, our communities, and our lives are made vastly stronger and richer by faith and the countless acts of justice and mercy it inspires. Faith-based organizations will always be critical allies in meeting the challenges that face our nation and our world--from domestic and global poverty, to climate change and human trafficking."
"People of faith and religious organizations do amazing work in communities across this country and the world, and we believe in lifting up and valuing that good work, and finding ways to support it where possible. We believe in constitutionally sound, evidence-based partnerships with faith-based and other non-profit organizations to serve those in need and advance our shared interests. There is no conflict between supporting faith-based institutions and respecting our Constitution, and a full commitment to both principles is essential for the continued flourishing of both faith and country."
"The first provision of the First Amendment concerns freedom of religion...That assurance has never been more needed than it is today, as liberal elites try to drive religious beliefs--and religious believers--out of the public square. The Founders of our American Republic universally agree that democracy presupposes a moral people and that, in the words of George Washington's Farewell Address, 'Of all the dispositions and habits which lead to political prosperity, religion and morality are indispensable supports.'"
"The most offensive instance of the war on religion has been the current Administration's attempt to compel faith-related institutions, as well as believing individuals, to contravene their deeply held religious, moral, or ethical beliefs regarding health services, traditional marriage, or abortion. This forcible secularization of religious and religiously affiliated organizations, including faith-based hospitals and colleges, has been in tandem with the current Administration's audacity in declaring which faith-related activities are, or are not, protected by the First Amendment."
"No healthcare professional or organization should be required to perform, provide for, withhold, or refer for a medical service against their conscience. This is especially true of the religious organizations which deliver a major portion of America's healthcare, a service rooted in the charity of faith communities."
"We support the ability of all organizations to provide, purchase, or enroll in healthcare coverage consistent with their religious, moral, or ethical convictions without discrimination or penalty."
"We pledge to respect the religious beliefs and rights of conscience of all Americans and to safeguard the independence of their institutions from government. We support the public display of the Ten Commandments as a reflection of our history and our Judeo-Christian heritage, and we affirm the right of students to engage in prayer at public school events in public schools and to have equal access to public schools."
"We assert every citizen's right to apply religious values to public policy and the right of faith-based organizations to participate fully in public programs without renouncing their beliefs, removing religious symbols, or submitting to government-imposed hiring practices. We oppose government discrimination against businesses due to their religious views."
"We support the First Amendment right of freedom of association of the Boy Scouts of America and other service organizations whose values are under assault and condemn the state blacklisting of religious groups which decline to arrange adoptions by same-sex couples."
"We will protect the religious independence of military chaplains and will not tolerate attempts to ban Bibles or religious symbols from military facilities."
