ng the rights of the unborn," Congressman Long said in a prepared statement.  "Taxpayer dollars should not support organizations that show such a flagrant disregard for human life."

Congresswoman Hartzler spoke on the House floor in support of Representative Pence's proposal.  "Planned Parenthood isn't about health, it's about profit.  They have a record of preferring abortion over the truth."  Planned Parenthood's profits are such that they can pay their President, Cecile Richards, nearly $400,000 a year.

Congressional efforts to zero out federal funding of Planned Parenthood comes at a time when the abortion provider has launched a major national expansion program.  Lisa David, senior vice-president of Planned Parenthood, recently confirmed that the organization is now mandating that every one of its affiliates must operate an abortion clinic by the year 2013.  Pro-life leader Jill Stanek has called the initiative "a major power play to wipe out independent abortion mills."

The victory on Planned Parenthood funding wasn't the only good news coming out of the continuing resolution adopted by the House of Representatives.  The House also reinstated the Mexico City policy implemented by President Reagan, which prohibits the disbursement of international "family planning" dollars to organizations which promote or perform abortions.  The House also removed all funding for the United Nations Population Fund, which has supported China's dastardly one-child-only forced abortion program.

Prospects for success of these pro-life provisions in the Senate are not good, where pro-abortion Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid will rally fellow Senators in support of Planned Parenthood.   President Obama has already promised to veto the House proposal.  Yet the President can't force spending into an appropriations bill.  The House is in a commanding position to derail the federal gravy train that has enriched Planned Parenthood over the years.

The real hero in the saga surrounding Palmer's abortion operation is a pro-lifer from St. Charles County named Sue Cooke.  This saintly woman led a group of prayer warriors and sidewalk counselors who maintained a regular vigil at Palmer's McKelvey Road location.

Palmer concluded that Cooke's efforts were having too much of an impact on his business, so he filed suit against her and a Catholic Church whose parishioners were among those with an active presence at the clinic.  The purpose of the lawsuit was clearly to ruin Cooke and her family financially.

While the Catholic parish decided to settle the lawsuit, Sue Cooke filed a suit of her own against Palmer, claiming that he was seeking to harass her and deprive her of her First Amendment rights to participate in a public protest.

Palmer is accustomed to litigation.  He has been the subject of various malpractice suits from patients involving alleged cases of incomplete abortions, blood poisoning, severed arteries, and permanent sterility.

The closure of Allen Palmer's abortion operation leaves only three active freestanding abortion clinics in the state of Missouri:  the Reproductive Health Services clinic in St. Louis operated by Planned Parenthood, and Planned Parenthood clinics in Columbia and Kansas City where medication abortions are offered.

However, pro-life leader Kathy Forck reports that no abortion appointments have been scheduled at the Columbia clinic for the last month.  Callers to the clinic are being told that abortions have been suspended due to a shortage of medical personnel.  Planned Parenthood has previously suspended operations for weeks at a time due to similar staffing and "scheduling" problems.

Please be praying for the Sue Cooke's and Kathy Forck's of the pro-life community who continue to stand up to the evil practice of homicide in the womb, and who do so in a caring and Christian fashion.  May these many selfless pro-lifers be richly rewarded for their dedication to saving women and children from the physical and emotional carnage of abortion.

Pro-Life

Leaders Remember

Dr. Bernard Nathanson

Dr. Bernard J. Nathanson, one of the pro-life movement's major converts, has died at the age of 84.  Nathanson was best known as the narrator of the groundbreaking pro-life documentary "The Silent Scream."

Nathanson was one of the founders of the National Association for the Repeal of Abortion Laws in 1969, the leading group seeking the liberalization of abortion laws in the years leading up to the Supreme Court's Roe v. Wade decision.

Nathanson's re-evaluation of his abortion views was prompted by the emergence of ultrasound technology.  "For the first time, one could really see the fetus, measure it, observe it, watch it and indeed bond with it and love it.  I began to do that,"  he wrote.

Nathanson became a household name in the pro-life movement in 1985 when he produced "The Silent Scream."  The chilling documentary showed an unborn child on a sonogram recoiling from medical instruments used in an abortion.

Nathanson narrated the documentary in eye-opening yet matter-of-fact fashion, stating, "We see the child's mouth open in a silent scream.  This is the silent scream of a child threatened imminently with extinction."

Nathanson went on to author pro-life books, and crusaded against the practice of partial-birth abortion.  Over the years he experienced a religious conversion as well.  While he considered himself an atheist, he was baptized as a Catholic in 1996.

Charmaine Yoest, President of Americans United for Life, saluted Nathanson's legacy.  "Dr. Nathanson was a beacon of uncompromising truth into the horrifying reality of abortion.  The courage and honesty of...'The Silent Scream' brought America demonstrably closer to the day when Roe v Wade is overturned. "

"Dr. Nathanson's work informs many of our efforts to expose the lies of abortion and the chilling depths to which pro-abortion advocates remain willing to stoop to realize their goals.  We are indebted to him and will strive to honor and advance his enormous legacy."

Showdown over Funding for Planned Parenthood Moves to U.S. Senate

The campaign by Indiana Congressman Mike Pence to eliminate federal funding of Planned Parenthood now shifts to the U.S. Senate following passage of his pro-life legislation by the U.S. House of Representatives.  House members approved Representative Pence's amendment to bar any federal appropriations to the nation's leading abortion provider.  Pence's proposal was approved by a vote of 240-185.  The amendment was added to a budgetary continuing resolution, which allocates federal funding to departments and agencies in the absence of an approved budget for fiscal year 2011.

"This debate is not about Planned Parenthood's right to be in the abortion business," Congressman Pence told his colleagues before the vote.  "Sadly, abortion on demand is legal in America.  This debate is about who pays for it."

"I long for the day when Roe v. Wade is sent to the ash heap of history--when we move past the broken hearts and broken lives of the past 38 years.  But as this debate rages on...let us at least respect the overwhelming consensus of the American people and end taxpayer support for abortion providers once and for all."

Planned Parenthood performed over 332,00 abortions in 2009 through its 85 affiliates across the country.  This amounted to over 27 percent of all the abortions performed in the United States that year.  It is estimated that Planned Parenthood has killed over 5.3 million preborn children in last four decades.

According to its own reports, Planned Parenthood received more than $363 million in government grants during the most recent year on record, amounting to about a third of the organization's annual revenues.  Public records show that Planned Parenthood received a total of $2.3 billion from government grants and programs between 2002 and 2008.

Congressman Pence charged that Planned Parenthood clinics had demonstrated a continuing pattern of apparent fraud and abuse.  "Planned Parenthood clinics have faced allegations of instructing young women to lie about their age to get abortions without their parents' knowledge, and have been found civilly liable for failure to report statutory rape."

"Planned Parenthood clinics have also been accused of fraudulent accounting and overbilling practices.  In recent weeks, undercover videos showed Planned Parenthood employees apparently willing to aid human sex traffickers by coaching them on how to falsify documents and secure secret abortions for underage prostitutes.  As the father of two teenage daughters, there are not words strong enough to portray my contempt for this pattern of [conduct]."

Abby Johnson, the former director of a Planned Parenthood clinic in Texas, says that the organization has a history of accommodating the sex trade.  "It happens all the time.  It happened at my clinic.  They forget to protect these minors that are being abused by pimps and older men.  They forget to protect these women that they are there to help."

Johnson says that Planned Parenthood fails to be true to its mission to protect women's rights.  "Planned Parenthood provides shabby, limited health care.  Their mission is to increase their abortion numbers and in turn increase their revenues.  There are better uses for our tax money.  Our tax money should go to organizations that provide comprehensive care to women, men, and children."

Tony Perkins, President of the Family Research Council, agrees.  "The fact that Planned Parenthood was willing to leave minor girls trapped in prostitution shows an incredible lack of humanity on their part.  What goes on behind the windowless offices of Planned Parenthood is both saddening and shocking, but the fact that it is often done with taxpayer dollars is indefensible."

Six of Missouri's nine congressional representatives voted to terminate federal funding of Planned Parenthood.  Congresswomen JoAnn Emerson and Vicky Hartzler, and Congressmen Todd Akin, Sam Graves, Blaine Luetkemeyer, and Billy Long voted for Pence's amendment.  Congressmen Emmanuel Cleaver, Russ Carnahan, and William "Lacy" Clay voted to continue taxpayer funding for Planned Parenthood.

"I believe in the sanctity of human life and protecting the rights of the unborn," Congressman Long said in a prepared statement.
